Wiz
Wiz has spent a lifetime under canvas, from childhood camping trips to guiding across Africa’s most remote wild places. A Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a seasoned expedition leader, he’s led safaris and exploratory journeys through 23 African countries, the Himalayas, the Arctic, and beyond. But it’s in Kenya that he feels most at home. He’s a Bronze KPSGA Guide, has completed a grasses course with Annie Powys and Dino Martins, and a Birding course with Washington Wachira. Being with Wiz and exploring Suguroi Ranch means a lot of fun discovering more about the flora and fauna. He’s constantly learning, and will spark your curiosity. Wiz’s Camp is grounded, unhurried, and deeply attuned to the land. He believes the best safaris are the simplest ones, where connection comes alive around a proper fire.
Grounding through Nature and the Elements
At Wiz’s Camp, we believe that to truly connect with ourselves, others, and the land, we must first become grounded. This isn’t just poetic language; it’s backed by growing research. Studies in environmental psychology show that immersion in natural settings enhances emotional regulation, reduces stress, and fosters meaningful social connection (Capaldi et al., 2015; Kuo, 2015). Exposure to the core elements - fire, water, earth, air - stimulates the senses and anchors attention in the present moment, promoting mindfulness and deeper interpersonal connection (Mayer et al., 2009).
Even simple acts like walking barefoot (often called “earthing”) have been linked to improved mood and physiological regulation (Chevalier et al., 2012).
At camp, hot bucket showers, wild walks, fireside meals, and starry skies aren’t luxuries - they are tools for connection. They are simple, primal rituals that ground us. And once grounded, we can truly connect — with nature, with each other, and with ourselves.
